english speech: videogames

I think that everybody here has played a video game. Today I will be talking about video games.

First I will be talking about addiction to games. All games are designed to keep the player playing. The designers use hooks that they put into the game to make it do that.
These are the main five hooks in video games: the High Score, Beating the Game, Role-Playing, Discovery, and Online Relationships. The main hooks used on tablets of some type are: The High Score,Beating the Game and Discovery. The main hooks used on computer are more Role-Playing, Discovery and Online Relationships.

The high score is when you get points or distance as a score so that you want to beat that score. Some examples are: temple run and jetpack joyride. Beating the game is when there is an objective and when you beat that objective it gets boring or you start again. some examples: cow evolution and five nights at freddy’s.

Discovery is when you get to explore imaginary worlds and do stuff in them. Examples: World of Warcraft and minecraft. Role-playing games are where you create a character and go on an adventure with that character. This creates an attachment to the character which makes it harder to stop playing. An example: WOW.  Online relationships are multi-player games where you can make online friends who accept you possibly more than your real friends.

Another reason video games are addicting is that they actually double the dopamine level in a players brain, according to a study by Hammersmith hospital in London. Dopamine is a hormone associated with pleasure. That means that video games can actually be chemically addicting.

Many sources say that videogames are going to be used in education and health because of the studies conducted on gamers. For instance: gamers are found to be able to multitask, make decisions and act on them better than non-gamers. Games also improve vision. Gamers can detect shades of grey better which helps in driving, piloting planes and reading x-rays. They also increase the amount of grey matter in the right hippocampus, right prefrontal cortex and the cerebellum -- areas of the brain responsible for spatial navigation, memory formation, strategic planning and fine motor skills. So basically, videogames are good for you, in moderate amounts.
